Going to the Movies in Guatemala

Last night James and I went to see the new James Bond movie at a nice movie theater, and we were once again torn between the advantages and disadvantages of public movie watching here in Guate. It's just not the same as Kansas.

Pros

  • It is so inexpensive compared to the States! All totalled, we spent less than $13 for a new release evening showing and a large popcorn and 2 drinks.
  • We get to practice our Spanish since every movie is subtitled
  • Going to the movies obviously makes a movie more exciting with the great and full sound, giant screen, and dark theater

Cons
  • People are obnoxiously loud. They talk at full volume constantly. In fact, we try to sit closer to the front to avoid listening to people talk throughout the entire film
  • People bring their kids. Now unfortunately people do that in the States, too, but when the kids are too young to read the subtitles, Mom and Dad are translating (out loud of course) and trying to keep their kids entertained through the whole flick when the little ones become bored. Who wouldn't -- dragged to a foreign film at the age of 7?
  • People answer their cell phones without a second thought. When we went to see the new Batman the lady beside us took FOUR phone calls! See Con #1. Talked at normal volume and didn't use an inside voice

Usually the Cons outweigh the Pros for us. Our compromise is to only see action flicks where talkative people won't annoy us so much.

Oh I would NOT appreciate that movie going experience! I think I would rather pay my $12.50 per ticket price (stupid freakin expensive CA)and at least be able to enjoy the movie! Miss you guys!

That sounds pretty accurate to some of our movie outings. Dillon refuses to go to the theater on a weekend. Recently we've sat next to "chair kicker/farter", "bags mcgee", "loud mouth breather/chronic cougher" and obnoxious teenagers who sit in the row directly in front of you even though the theater is almost empty. And don't forget the experiences that Dillon's dad had. The woman that burped on his neck and then changed her sons diaper by his head. haha!
